Virtual idols and false friends: In “Synthetic Embrace” Lia Lehmkuhl uses the figure Betty Blizz to examine artificially created idols that as apparent friends entangle us in a digital maze of consumerism, manipulation, and putative self-optimization. Waiting for us beyond the glittering façade, however, are not friends, but constructed forces.
